Last weekend (from December 12th-15th), World Series MVP and Champion, David “Big Papi” Ortiz, hosted his sixth annual charitable “David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic Powered By FUSE®” in his native Dominican Republic.
The three-day fundraising affair took place at the Sanctuary Cap Cana Resort and Punta Espada Golf Course, all to benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund.
The event was held in partnership with World Pediatric Project and Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, which provides critical pediatric healthcare for those in need in Boston and the Dominican Republic.
Over $350,000 was raised as highlights from the live auction included hitting lessons with Big Papi during Spring Training 2014 and a lunch with Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (A-Rod).
Some of the biggest names in sports attended, including: A-Rod; Toronto Blue Jays’ Jose Bautisa; Baltimore Orioles’ Adam Jones and Manny Machado; San Diego Tigers; Yonder Alonso; Detroit Tigers’ (and former Red Sox infielder) Jose Iglesias; Colorado Rockies pitcher Franklin Morales; MLB Network’s Kevin Millar, TV personality Heidi Watney & former Sox Sean Casey; TNT & TBS sideline reporter Craig Sager; Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman; MLB Hall of Famers Barry Larkin and Jim Rice; former MLB stars Tim Wakefield, Mariano Duncan, Andrés Galarraga, Luis Tiant and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez.
Former NFL stars Lawrence Taylor, Troy Brown and former professional boxer Micky Ward rounded off the list of athletes.
There was also a taste of Hollywood present, including: actors Chris Tucker and Sam Page; former Boston Celtics player-turned-actor Rick Fox and his leading lady, Eliza Dushku; actress and former SNL cast member, Rachel Dratch; MTV Host Sway; and, Dexter’s Aimee Garcia.
Bringing the Boston flair was celebrity chef Ming Tsai, restaurateur Nick Varano, comedian Lenny Clark and KISS 108’s Matty Siegel.
Local Latinos who made the trip were recently elected Cambridge City Councilor Dennis Benzan, restaurant owners Hector Pina (Merengue Restaurant and Vejigantes) and Pedro Alarcon (La Casa de Pedro) along with 2014 Rhode Scholar and Harvard senior Alex Diaz and El Mundo President and CEO Alberto Vasallo, III.
