Screening features an optional dinner catered by El Oriental de Cuba Restaurant
Belmont World Film presents the New England premiere of the Cuban film Agosto, as the opening night screening of its 19th Annual International Film Series on Sunday, March 15, at 7:30 PM at the Studio Cinema in Belmont (376 Trapelo Road).
The screening is preceded by an optional dinner reception featuring eastern Cuban cuisine catered by El Oriental de Cuba from 6-7 PM and followed by a discussion led by Denisse Delgado Vazquez, a sociologist originally from Cuba, who is currently a PhD candidate in public policy at UMass Boston.
Loosely based on director Armando Capó’s experiences in his rural hometown of Gibara, the film is not only a coming-of-age story, but also a memory of a time in the not-so-distant past that is still quite relevant today.
Set during the summer of 1994, when the collapse of the Soviet Union and the ensuing shortage of food, supplies, and electricity compels people to make the perilous journey to the US by boat, the film focuses on a teenage boy who spends that fateful summer caring for his grandmother and developing his first crush.
The film is the first of eight in a series entitled “Family Ties,” featuring films from around the world—many of which premiered and won awards at major international film festivals—that focus on family relations.
Tickets to the dinner are $30 must be purchased by Thursday, March 12, at 11:59 PM. No tickets will be sold at the door. They can be purchased online at www.ticketor.com/belmontworldfilm or by mailing a check payable to Belmont World Film, PO Box 104, Belmont, MA 02478.
