Boston City Council Election 2021:

For residents and voters in district 6 (which includes Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury and parts of Mission Hill and Roslindale), Mary Tamer, a candidate running to represent this district in the Boston City Council, has submitted the following article for El Mundo Newspaper readers.

She feels there are major differences between her and her opponent (Kendra Hicks) and that many hard-working Latino families share her views with respect to several very important issues in the following piece.

Mary Tamer is a lifelong Democrat, former Boston School Committee member, and past President of the League of Women Voters of Boston, who is running for City Council to address some of the city’s greatest needs.

These needs include strengthening our Boston Public Schools, addressing environmental challenges, creating more permanent affordable housing, ensuring a safe and equitable COVID recovery, and supporting seniors.

Mary has a track record of fighting for justice and equity, as well as creating policy and gaining the support it needs in order for it to be passed.

Jeffrey Sánchez: “I am proudly supporting Mary Tamer for Boston City Council. Growing up in Mission Hill and raising my family in Jamaica Plain, I know how important it is to have elected leaders with the right policy priorities and experience to get things done. Mary has done that throughout her career.”

Following the preliminary election which narrowed the field to two candidates but had low voter turnout, the race should be focused on presenting voters with information so they can make an informed decision.

There are several important policy differences between Mary and her opponent, Kendra Hicks.

  1. While Kendra has stated for many years that she is in favor of the complete defunding and abolition of the police and prisons, Mary is in support of common-sense reforms such as more community policing.
  2. Regarding their political affiliation, Kendra identifies as a Socialist and is endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, while Mary has been a Democrat her entire life.
  3. Mary is also passionate about voting access, and in 2009, was recognized by the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts with the Lotte E. Scharfman Citizen Education Award for the production of innovative voter information materials in several languages. Kendra Hicks has missed 14 of the last 20 elections, including the 2016 presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
  4. Mary has been endorsed by many leaders in the community, including former state Rep. Jeffrey Sánchez, a resident of Jamaica Plain. Last week, Mary was endorsed by Yolanda Torres, President of the Mildred C. Hailey Apartments Tenant Organization. Mary has also been endorsed by the incumbent City Councilor Matt O’Malley (D-West Roxbury); the Honorable Angela Menino, wife of the late Mayor Tom Menino among others.

A proud graduate of the Boston Public Schools, Mary and her husband, Paul – a Roslindale native – live in West Roxbury where they raised their two sons who also attended Boston Public Schools.

The middle of three daughters, Mary grew up in a multigenerational, bilingual home on Washington Street purchased by her great grandparents when they brought their young family to Boston from Zahlé, Lebanon.

Mary Tamer is humbly asking for your vote this Tuesday, November 2nd.
