Karol G is having a massive week. Her new album, NO ME ARREPIENTO DE SENTIR TANTO, just debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart and cracked the top 10 on the Billboard 200. The record-breaking launch coincides with history on the road: her VIAJANDO POR EL MUNDO TROPITOUR just wrapped a sold-out three-night run at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, drawing over 130,000 fans and making her the first Latina artist to headline three consecutive shows at the venue.
Next up, the massive stadium run heads to New England, where she’ll take over Gillette Stadium on September 12th. Local fans will remember when she made history in Foxborough back in 2023 as the first Latina artist to headline and sell out the iconic home of the Patriots. Now, she’s returning bigger than ever, riding the wave of another record-shattering release.
Behind the stadium numbers, the 14-track project is surprisingly intimate, steering away from typical party anthems to focus on raw, headphone-first storytelling about love, heartbreak, and healing. While big-name features like Drake and Bruno Mars give the project global reach, the heart of the album lies in a cumbia-infused track called Alguien Que Te Amaba, a song that directly connects today’s Latin pop landscape to Tejano history.
The track was co-written by Pete Astudillo, a former member of Selena y Los Dinos and the pen behind iconic classics like Como la Flor and Amor Prohibido. After Selena’s death in 1995, Astudillo released tribute music but eventually stepped away from the spotlight, quietly retiring from mainstream songwriting.
Working with Astudillo was a dream for Karol G, who has a tattoo of Selena on her arm and frequently cites the Tejano legend as her primary inspiration. She asked her producer, Édgar Barrera, to track Astudillo down. Once contacted, Astudillo fell in love with the album’s emotional concept and agreed to come out of retirement to co-write the track, later calling the finished song a dream come true.
By bringing Astudillo back into the studio, Karol G does more than indulge in nostalgia. She bridges generational lines, introducing traditional Texas cumbia to a global streaming audience of millions. In an era where regional Latin sounds are dominating worldwide, Alguien Que Te Amaba proves that packing out massive venues like Gillette Stadium and honoring your musical roots can happen at the exact same time.
On an album designed to be experienced as a cohesive emotional journey, Astudillo’s involvement grounds Karol G’s global dominance in real heritage. It serves as a reminder that filling stadiums and honoring your musical ancestors can go hand in hand, forging a vital link between the history and the future of Latin music.
